USB conflict?

OK, so ever since I installed the BackPack DVD ReWriter USB drivers on my laptop, my USB mouse (Kensington Expert Trackball) has been intermittently freezing up. The problem seemed to go away after I unplugged it and then re-plugged it in (I have no idea if the order in which devices are plugged in makes a difference, but it seems reasonable.) The built-in trackpad seems to work OK without the freezing effect.

Two additional facts: 1) the BackPack drive isn't even plugged in right now; and 2) I've replaced the ball in the Kensington with a number 8 pool ball from Mueller Recreational Products - a suprise gift from Lisa.
